"Empowering learners through tailored, project-based education."

"When you want to change the world, start with Education!"

As a teacher, and school leader, with a decade and a half of experience in education, it will come as little surprise that I am passionate about facilitating learning. What might be a surprise is that despite the technological advancements in the world, as well as the growing awareness of global issues throughout that time, education remains dogmatically focused on the teaching and learning of the past; education that was perfectly acceptable 200 years ago, is not the education that's needed (or wanted) today!

The education I know to be most transformative for young people, is one of relevance, of excitement and of purpose!

In the ever changing landscape we are undeniably in, students need to be taught skills to enable them to not only navigate their futures but thrive in them. Of course knowledge still plays a part, but with information being accessible at the touch of a button (thank you, AI!), what is most important is having the ability to manipulate that information. Critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, communication, presentation skills - these are all the skills of tomorrow and ESD focuses on the development of these and many more.

I have been fortunate enough to witness first hand how providing relevant, meaningful educational experiences, which give the students autonomy, can result in engaged, motivated and excited students. By following the ESD framework and incorporating the SDGs into the curriculum, not only will the students be exposed to relevant learning, they will be able to relate to it personally, develop more of an understanding about local and global issues and, arguably most importantly, be provided with the opportunities to take action to help solve these issues, whether that be in their local communities, nationally or globally.

Bridget Phillipson, Education Secretary, recently declared a ‘national epidemic of school absence’; something needs to change, and change fast! Disengagement with an outdated and irrelevant curriculum is evident across the board. Enter sustainability education, SustainEd.

Education is one of the most important, powerful, transformative gifts we can give; not only to our youth but to everyone, to all of us. Education, done right, can change the world for the better!

Sustainability Education is often referred to as Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), which has been defined as:

UNESCO, 2014

"Education for Sustainable Development allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future.

Education for Sustainable Development means including key sustainable development issues into teaching and learning; for example, climate change, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity, poverty reduction, and sustainable consumption.

It also requires participatory teaching and learning methods that motivate and empower learners to change their behaviour and take action for sustainable development. Education for Sustainable Development consequently promotes competencies like critical thinking, imagining future scenarios and making decisions in a collaborative way.

Education for Sustainable Development requires far-reaching changes in the way education is often practised today."

Council of the European Union, 2010

"ESD is essential for the achievement of a sustainable society and is therefore desirable at all levels of formal education and training, as well as in non-formal and informal learning."

Sustainable Development Education Panel Report, 1998

"ESD is about the learning needed to maintain and improve our quality of life and the quality of life of generations to come ... ESD enables people to develop the knowledge, values and skills to participate in decisions about the way we do things individually and collectively, both locally and globally, that will improve the quality of life now without damaging the planet for the future."
